Computer Recycling Explained

WEEE-RecycleIT and the environment

In spite of our trading name, the thinking behind our company is not to recycle the equipment we collect but to repair and reuse it. If we were to only recycle the equipment we collected then we haven’t really achieved much in the way of reducing the pollution created by manufacturing more equipment. The equipment we collect can be refurbished and used again.

WEEE-RecycleIt are firm advocates of the circular economy. A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy where the product is manufactured, the consumer uses and then disposes of it. There are many examples of the “make, use, dispose” philosophy in today’s society and the electronics industry and us, the consumers, have a duty to be more mindful of what we do with our unwanted equipment. The circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design. Our intention is to keep resources in use for as long as possible and extract the maximum life span from them. At the end of the product life cycle we pass the product onto our licensed recycle partners for material recovery and re-purpose.

It is more important than ever before to achieve the highest level of reuse and recycle of equipment. Our fragile environment should be front and centre of conscious our thinking when drawing up reuse and recycle policies.

This page will explain how we apply the circular economy philosophy in our day to day activities.

Requesting a collection: Booking a collection couldn’t be easier. Our office staff are here to help and advise. The collection can be arranged quickly after a list of the equipment is sent to us.

Making the collection: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak we have now re-written the policy for collections to protect our staff and customers and to make our business compliant with the UK Government and Public Health England guidelines.

Assessment of the computer equipment: Everything we collect is unloaded into a quarantine area and is sorted and assessed.

Handling of data and cleansing machines: This stage is all about correct data handling and the removal of tags that could identify the originator of the machine.

Repair of the equipment: We try to repair and restore as much of the equipment as possible. We refurbish parts from what we can and place into stock to use for other machines in the future.

Resale of equipment: All the equipment we have repaired, is then a prepared for sale.

The collection, reuse and recycle process

Requesting a collection: Booking a collection couldn’t be easier. Our office staff are here to help and advise. When making a booking request all we ask is that you supply a full list of the equipment you would like to be collected and a preferred date. If you are signed up to our newsletter then you will have a date in mind for when we are in your area. If you are not signed up, we will offer you a date as close to your ideal as possible. Once agreed, the office will then book you in and send you a confirmation along with waste Transfer Note (WTN). Please print and sign the WTN and keep for your records. On the day of the collection the equipment must be moved as close to the exit as possible.

Making the collection: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak we have now re-written the policy for collections. This policy can be accessed on the home page by clicking the “How we’re responding to COVID-19” button. We have implemented this policy to protect our staff and customers and to keep our business compliant with the UK Government and Public Health England guidelines.

Assessment of the computer equipment: Everything we collect is unloaded into a quarantine area and is sorted and assessed before moving onto the repair station. At this stage the loose equipment is sorted and stored. We thoroughly check all boxes to make sure that there are no hard drives or other data bearing devices left in them.

Handling of data and cleansing of machines: This stage is all about correct data handling and the removal of tags that could identify the originator of the machine. We remove all the data bearing devices, hard drives (HDD’s) and solid state drives (SSD’s) from the machines and put them through our data cleansing software program that overwrites all sectors of the device seven times with random binary data. Once the drives have passed this stage they are further tested for bad sectors if they pass this stage then they are deemed ready for reuse. All identification tags are removed from the equipment that we have collected and is moved onto the the next stage of the process.

Repair of the equipment: We add memory and a hard drive or solid state drive to the equipment and power on. All CDROM drawers are opened to check for CD’s that may have been left inside. The BIOS is then reset and the computer or laptop is put through a series of tests and inspections to make sure of its suitability for resale. It is then cleaned and passed on to the next area for resale. We try to repair and restore as much of the equipment as possible and when computer equipment fails we will salvage and refurbish parts from it. The parts are then placed into stock for use in other machines in the future. The rest of the failed equipment will then enter the recycle stream.

Resale of equipment: All the equipment we have repaired is then prepared for sale. All the equipment that has been repaired or placed into the recycle stream is sold or recycled in the UK to domestic companies. We send 100% of our recycle equipment to UK based licensed Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities (AATF’s).
